We should have known. All the rain that came with Hurricane Gustav will provide the perfect nursery for record numbers of mosquitoes in the days and weeks ahead. Here in Monroe, LA, it rained more than 9 inches in 24 hours. In the little town of Lake Providence, LA, they received 20 inches of rain in about 36 hours.
Please be diligent in making sure there is no standing water around your yard. Check all the flower pots, pet bowls, bird baths, etc. that may have standing water. I change the water in my bird bath every day. The birds like it, and it eliminates the growing medium for mosquito larvae.
There was severe flooding in parts of Monroe and West Monroe. The son of a friend lived in the apartments near the West Monroe Guest House, and their flooding was so severe that they lost everything. What a shame. This is more widespread that you might imagine. If you can offer a helping hand to some of your neighbors, I'm sure they will really appreciate it. Even a small kindness like giving flood victims some towels, sharing supper or buying some pet food will make a big difference in how they feel. It must be really awful to be left with NOTHING in such a short period of time.

Hi Gayle... how wonderful of you to host other KW family members during these tough times for them. That is the true KW spirit!
And thanks for the always good reminder about standing water... those folks certainly don't need a potential West Nile Virus epidemic on top of the hurricane damage!
When I evacuated New Orleans, several friends invited me to stay in Monroe. I'm an NLU (not ULM) alumni. I'm glad now I chose a hotel in Florida since my friends in the ArkLaMiss have a lot of cleanup to do! Monroe has always been there for us, so please let us know what we can do for you.
Thanks, Troy. Monroe had rain, rain, rain, and more rain. Luckily, the wind was bearable, but we still lost some trees. The damage here is light. I did not lose power, nor did the office, so we did well.
My daughter couldn't wait to return to NOLA, either. Like you, she returned to no power for a couple of days. I got a text from her last night (Friday) rejoicing that the electricity was restored! That's definitely a cause for celebration!
Keep us in mind if you have to leave again. We'll have a place for your laptop to plug in and wireless fired up!

Gayle, I'm so glad that your daughter is home safely and not in the dark!
Kudos to you for taking in those that needed a place to stay - and thanks for the invitation to plug in at your place during our own evacuation - that meant sooooo much to me :)
